Welcome To the ArtChallenge Wiki

Rediscover or reconnect with your innate creative abilities in a fun and supportive community. Share your work with like-minded creators, and encourage others to do the same.

About the ArtChallenge

Artistic expression is a natural human ability. Drawing is in our bones. Poetry is in our blood. We might choose not to pursue artistic expression, but it's always there, waiting to be released.

The ArtChallenge is about trying new things, or trying things again. Most of the materials are common household items and inexpensive supplies. Members are encouraged to improvise and expand. Each challenge is intended to be a launching pad, not a cage.

Most important: if you're not having fun, then something's amiss. Focus on creating something that brings you joy, and share it with others to inspire them to create as well.

A Note To Parents

Parents, please do not encourage your children to participate in the ArtChallenge. If you really want them to participate, then participate yourself. When they beg you to let them try, tell them "no, this is only for sophisticated grown-up adults, go play a video game." Only when they have been reduced to tears should you allow them to try the ArtChallenge. I'm probably kidding about all that.

How To Be an Art Critic

Participants are encouraged to comment on one another's work. If you want to be taken seriously as a critic, here are some pointers (taken from Mona Brookes and Toastmasters, International).

  • The first thing you say when anyone shows you a piece of art work is this: "I like it!" Then say what you sincerely like about it. I like the freedom, I like the realism, I like the use of color, I like that you're having fun, I like, I like, I like. If you can't find something to like about any piece of art, you're not looking hard enough.
  • If you have constructive criticism, it's best to use the "sandwich" method. Here are a couple of things I like about the work, here are one (maybe two) things that you might try next time, here are a couple more things I like about it. No one just wants to hear negative feedback, and will tune you out if that's all you provide.
  • When someone asks "what do you think of my work," what they're really saying is "here is my heart, you hold it in your hands, treat it gently." There are few crimes in this world worse that crushing the creative spirit of another. Handle with care.
  • Your goal, as a critic, is to increase the ratio of art to chaos in the universe. Always err on the side of encouragement and compassion as you help guide others on their creative quest.
